Japan 2025

As with all chapters of my life, the few pages I spent in Japan have left a permanent mark. It’s in my newfound appreciation for silence, my depleted tolerance for mediocre sushi, and the unforgettable dread I felt on the journey home. How could I just leave with so much left to discover?
I did my best with the time I had—and with the clearest mind I could manifest—to learn every lesson this place offered.
I arrived with my faction at the tail end of an unusually hot summer with no real plan beyond our centrally located apartments in Tokyo. To some, this lack of structure might seem chaotic. However, I’ve found that if a few basic principles are followed, I can gain my footing almost anywhere.
A quick disclaimer: I avoid tourist traps, preferring to live among working-class locals whenever possible. These tips may not resonate with those seeking the curated resort experience. Additionally, as a large African American man, I recognize that intersectional results will vary by locale.
Here are the three principles that guided my journey.

I left Centralia inspired and eager to create. You would think that after solo filming a documentary over the weekend that I would want to rest as soon as I got home, but for me, at least this time, I’m grabbing my board and camera as I head straight to my local skatepark.
By this time most people at the park are familiar with me and know to expect a party when I pull up with my camera. The same way they tighten up their tricks, I try to find new creative ways to capture them. But this time, I stumbled upon a brilliant creative option completely by accident. However, because I had worked on understanding the fundamentals of the exposure triangle with my mentor Tobi, I was well equipped to take advantage of the situation.

During the weekend of The 4th of July, the Hills and Bibbs families come together for a family reunion. It’s a celebration of life, a chance to hear and tell stories, and to build stronger bonds for the future.
I decided to take this opportunity to film the conversations I had with my elders while they are still able to pass on their wisdom. This project is an exploration into my maternal roots from the rural midwest.

It’s Saturday, June 5th, and I have nothing really planned for the day — so I go through my regular weekend rituals up and through the early afternoon. That is until I receive a phone call from my mentor, Tobi, at exactly 2:42 pm.
He asks me to join him as a 2nd shooter for a photoshoot that will start in an hour…
The shoot is in DC, it’s for NUNAR Magazine and they are doing a cover story about the artist Malik DOPE. He’s from the area, and well-known for his skills as a percussionist, his vibrant personality, and his role as a global ambassador for Go-Go music.
Of course, I drop everything I’m doing and I head straight to DC from Baltimore…

Tobi x2
My good friend and photography mentor, Tobi, was gracious enough to share his setup for double exposure studio portraits. He is a big reason I picked up a camera to begin with, so it was my honor shoot him with his own style.
